Outreach
Both in and out of church, Sanctuary seeks to make a difference.
Plaid Place Children's Sunday School/Church
Plaid fabric's design intersects over itself, creating different grids, colors, shades, shapes, and patterns in its wake. Using this imagery signifies the ways that we connect with God, the ways we and He overlap in life, and the way we connect and overlap with others who also believe in God, but may in some way be different than we are. Currently in process, Plaid Place seeks to establish the fundamentals of faith for young children, preparing them for baptism, developing a prayer life, church involvement and participation, Bible reading, and learning them about God - all on a plaid rug.
LOGOS Youth Program and Young Adults
LOGOS stands for "Loving our God our Savior." Currently in process, Sanctuary is in development of a full youth curriculum that helps individuals from sixth through twelfth grade (ages 11/12-17/18) find a sense of safety and belonging in church settings while having fun and exploring the importance of spiritual fellowship with one another.
In addition, we desire to offer transition from youth to young adult with the heart to help young adults of college age (17/18) to around 25 years old establish themselves in church.
Queer Christian Scholarship
It's not a secret that many affirming/inclusive churches don't offer much in the areas of scholarship. At Sanctuary, we strive to be different. Through our efforts, we are diligent students of Scripture and contextual understanding of the whole Bible, even passages that seem difficult or conflicting to understand.
Within the next few years, Sanctuary seeks to establish a queer theological library as well as expanding our resources to include more people, from various audiences, in the conversation about the essential truths of inclusive Christian theology.
Leadership Program
Sanctuary has a unique leadership model designed to train leaders in-house with practical ministry experience. Whether you've been in ministry for many years, you desire to start over again, or you are just discovering your calling and you're not sure how everything might fit together, we have a place just for you!
We offer members the opportunity to serve both in Helps Ministries and as leaders-in-training to receive their needed experience through internships. Interested ministers-in-training receive the opportunity to work on a membership team, develop essential communication skills, discover and enhance spiritual gifts, preach, teach, and receive the rite of ordination, all while doing so in a spiritually safe atmosphere. Sanctuary offers leaders the chance to grow, change, heal, develop, and thrive as they come as they are, grow as God calls, and find what they need.
Sanctuary Spaces
Many individuals long for a deeper sense of community than is provided by the average church situation. The "Sanctuary Spaces" general heading represents any specific program that feature Bible study, forum, community involvement, or group that happens outside of the church setting. These include community discussions and podcasts, movie nights and special events, and prison ministry. The public is welcome to participate in Sanctuary Spaces (with the exception of prison ministry outreach).
Staff for events have passed comprehensive background checks. If you are interested in participating in a Sanctuary Space in prison, you must be able to pass a background screening as required by the States of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia.
D&D Campaign/Game Night
One of Sanctuary's main goals is community. This means we are all about eliminating loneliness, whether or not someone regularly attends our church. In this spirit, Sanctuary hosts a D&D campaign in Charlotte, North Carolina. With special interest in engaging the LGBTQ+ community, our current D&D night was designed to welcome and include individuals who might otherwise find it difficult to join a campaign.
D&D is hosted in Charlotte on the second Wednesday of the month. Three of Sanctuary's leaders are active and involved in the adventure game that develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
D&D not your thing? Don't despair! We are in process to start a separate periodic game night featuring other games, including Cards Against Humanity, Game That Song, The Bible is Funny, and Uno!
Sanctuary Music Collective
A new project that we will begin in 2024, the Sanctuary Music Collective offers the opportunity for queer Christian worship leaders and musicians to work together for the product of unique songs and sounds for the Christian community.
Dry Goods Collective
With time, Sanctuary intends to create a dry goods pantry for those in need. In the meantime, we distribute dry goods through "blessing bags" which we hand out to the homeless in our area.
Community Events
Sanctuary hosts an annual Friendsgiving (closest Sunday to Thanksgiving) dinner, an annual Easter Hymn Sing and Brunch, and an annual Pride Prom event for the city of Charlotte. If you are in the area and would like to help or attend, feel free to reach out for more information.
